RACING LEGEND MARKS 50TH ANNIVERSARY OF GRAND PRIX WIN

Sir Jackie Stewart Celebrates First World Championship…

Famed racecar driver Sir Jackie Stewart celebrated the 50th anniversary of his first British Grand Prix victory at the Silverstone Classic held at the Northamptonshire, England, racetrack, home of British motorsports.

Racing legend Sir Jackie Stewart recently returned to Northamptonshire, England, the home of British motorsports, to celebrate the 50th anniversary of his first British Grand Prix victory, which came at the track in 1969.

To mark the golden anniversary of that milestone—the first of his three world championships—Stewart was back behind the wheel of his race-winning blue Matra MS80-02 for some laps during this year’s Silverstone Classic, July 26 – 28.

“The Matra is a special car to me, and it’s always a real thrill to be back in it,” said Stewart, who noted that the racecar has been kept in its original condition. “Over the years, I have driven it from time to time, but to have the Matra back here on the Silverstone circuit 50 years after that win really brings back so many happy memories. It seems just yesterday sometimes!”

The Silverstone Classic is a three-day car and race event held annually at the UK’s Silverstone circuit, home of the British Grand Prix. First established in 1990, the event—which draws more than 100,000 visitors—is billed as a major historic motorsports festival featuring vintage vehicle displays and historic F1 races, including Grand Prix cars dating back to the  sport’s heyday between 1966 and 1985.

This year’s festival also include a charity fundraiser close to Jackie Stewart’s heart.  Following his wife’s diagnosis of frontotemporal dementia, he founded Race Against Dementia in the belief that Formula 1 technology and philosophies could produce earlier solutions to the condition. To support the effort, all funds raised at the Silverstone Classic by the festival’s charity partner, Alzheimer’s Research UK, are going directly to Race Against Dementia Felllowships.

“I am extremely grateful to the organizers for supporting Race Against Dementia,” said Stewart. “Helen and I will be truly proud of what we’re doing to challenge her illness and the challenge dementia poses to us all.” www.silverstoneclassic.com

U.K TRADE ASSOCIATION STATES POSITION ON BREXIT

Organization Asserts ‘No Deal’ Presents Risk To Auto Industry…

Mike Hawes, chief executive of the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT), recently issued the following statement in relation to the ongoing Brexit saga.

“We welcome the Exiting the European Union Committee report and its categorical finding that a ‘no deal’ Brexit would be a fundamental risk to the UK automotive industry’s competitiveness and jobs. We have always been clear about the devastating consequences of ‘no deal,’ and as the report says, planning for such an outcome has already had a chilling effect on investment in the sector,” stated Hawes.

SMMT is one of the largest and most influential trade associations in the U.K. It supports interests of the UK automotive industry at home and abroad, promoting a united position to government, stakeholders and the media.

“UK and EU automotive industries are deeply integrated,” added Hawes, “and it’s vital we maintain all the conditions that have made us globally competitive. As echoed in the report, at the very least, this means tariff-free trade, frictionless borders. ‘No deal’ must be avoided at all costs or risk irreversible damage to this vital sector.”
